1. Old Town

Type  Old Town

The old town of Aix is one of the most pleasant places in France for a walk. The streets feel human sized, traffic is limited, the façades glow in warm honey tones.

The heart of it all is the Cours Mirabeau. An avenue lined with plane trees, elegant buildings, famous cafés, terraces that are usually full. But Aix is not just this main boulevard. What really makes the city special are its squares. Some are small and intimate, others are wider and lively. They follow one another like open air living rooms.

You sit down on a terrace, in the sun or under the trees, you watch people go by, you talk about everything and nothing. That terrace culture is a big part of life here.

Between the squares, a maze of narrow streets connects everything. If you look up, you notice baroque townhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries, carved doors, impressive staircases. Aix has the third largest concentration of baroque architecture in France, after Paris and Versailles.

And then there are the fountains. They are everywhere. Big ones, discreet ones, moss covered ones, elegant ones. You quickly understand why people call Aix the city of a “thousand” fountains.
