Centre Historique

Avignon’s historic center is one of the largest protected heritage areas in France. The city walls are the first striking feature visitors notice. Stretching for almost five kilometres, once lined with thirty nine towers and pierced by seven main gates, they still encircle Avignon with an impressive fourteenth century fortification. The section between the Rocher des Doms and the Pont d’Avignon is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

However, it is not possible to walk along the ramparts, except for a very short section beside Avignon’s medieval bridge.

Behind these walls, the old town has retained a strong architectural identity, with a dense and winding street pattern that can sometimes feel almost hidden. It is easy to move from a lively main street to a much quieter alleyway. Much of its charm comes from the narrow views, old façades, carved details, discreet doorways, glimpses of inner courtyards, and elegant townhouses that recall the city’s prestigious past.

The scenery alternates between shaded passageways, small squares, characterful houses, and religious or civic buildings that reflect several different periods. The old town has preserved an atmosphere that is at once medieval, distinctly Provençal, and full of life, where history remains ever present without making the city feel frozen in time.

Once you’re on the other side, it’s all about the walk. There’s a nice path set up along the water, perfect for strolling at your own pace. On one side, you’ve got green spaces, and on the other, the iconic outline of the old bridge of Avignon slowly comes into view as you go.

Full Name
Palais des Papes d’Avignon

The Palace of the Popes is the largest Gothic-style palace in the world. This massive Gothic fortress served as the residence of the popes during the 14th century, making it a focal point of European Christendom.

Historically, the palace was the seat of the Catholic Church from 1305 to 1377 during the Avignon Papacy, when seven successive popes chose to reside here instead of in Rome. Then, two more popes resided here until 1403, but in parallel with the presence of popes in Rome, creating the period known as the Papal Schism.

After the papacy returned to Rome, the palace’s influence waned, but it remained a symbol of papal power. Over the centuries, it transitioned from residences to barracks, and finally became a cultural monument.

Notable elements of the palace include its grand halls, its chapel, various rooms, a garden, and panoramic views from the top.

The Avignon Bridge is a partially collapsed medieval bridge that has become one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Spanning the Rhône River, it is famous for its connection to the popular French nursery rhyme “Sur le Pont d’Avignon

Although it is partially collapsed, you can still walk on it and enjoy the views it offers.

Historically, the bridge was constructed in the late 12th century as a vital link between Avignon and the town of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon across the Rhône. However, it was frequently damaged by floods, and although it was partially rebuilt several times, it was abandoned by the 17th century and left in its current ruined state.

When  3 Weeks in July (each year)

Full Name
Festival d’Avignon

Every year, for three weeks in July, Avignon moves to the beat of its theatre festival, the biggest of its kind in the world.
Around that time, there’s no missing it, the city walls get absolutely covered with colourful posters for all the shows happening.

Actually, there are two festivals running side by side.
The “In” is the official one, with artistic creations staged in theatres and iconic venues.
The “Off”, on the other hand, pretty much takes over the whole city. In the streets, on the squares, and even at café terraces, actors and musicians pop up one after another, giving Avignon this joyful and buzzing vibe.

It’s a one-of-a-kind time of year, intense, festive, and it turns the whole city into a giant open-air stage.

If you don’t speak French, the festival is still accessible. Some of the shows in both the “In” and the “Off” have no dialogue at all, relying on movement, music, or visual performance.
And for plays that do have lines, some venues offer English surtitles so you can still follow the story.
