The Palace of the Popes is the largest Gothic-style palace in the world. This massive Gothic fortress served as the residence of the popes during the 14th century, making it a focal point of European Christendom.

Although it is partially collapsed, you can still walk on it and enjoy the views it offers.

Historically, the bridge was constructed in the late 12th century as a vital link between Avignon and the town of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon across the Rhône. However, it was frequently damaged by floods, and although it was partially rebuilt several times, it was abandoned by the 17th century and left in its current ruined state.

FESTIVAL

1. Avignon Theater Festival

Appeal  ✦✦✦✦✦
When  3 Weeks in July (each year)

Full Name
Festival d’Avignon

Every year, for three weeks in July, Avignon moves to the beat of its theatre festival, the biggest of its kind in the world.
Around that time, there’s no missing it, the city walls get absolutely covered with colourful posters for all the shows happening.

Actually, there are two festivals running side by side.
The “In” is the official one, with artistic creations staged in theatres and iconic venues.
The “Off”, on the other hand, pretty much takes over the whole city. In the streets, on the squares, and even at café terraces, actors and musicians pop up one after another, giving Avignon this joyful and buzzing vibe.

It’s a one-of-a-kind time of year, intense, festive, and it turns the whole city into a giant open-air stage.

If you don’t speak French, the festival is still accessible. Some of the shows in both the “In” and the “Off” have no dialogue at all, relying on movement, music, or visual performance.
And for plays that do have lines, some venues offer English surtitles so you can still follow the story.
