Basilique Saint-Denis

Full Names
Basilique Cathédrale Saint-Denis
Basilique Royale de Saint-Denis

The Basilica of Saint-Denis holds a unique place in French history. Built on the site of an ancient pilgrimage destination, it was enlarged during the 12th and 13th centuries using innovative techniques that marked the birth of Gothic architecture. Its grand façade, soaring vaults, and vast stained glass windows fill the interior with light and create an impressive sense of height.

The highlight of the visit is the royal necropolis. Over the centuries, forty kings, twenty six queens, and many members of the royal family were buried here. More than seventy tombs and funerary sculptures trace the evolution of French sculpture, from the rigid figures of the Middle Ages to the far more lifelike works of the Renaissance.

You’ll see many of France’s most important monarchs, depicted lying in repose, kneeling in prayer, or surrounded by symbolic figures. Although the French Revolution disrupted many of the royal tombs, a large number of monuments were later recovered and restored. Together, they form an extraordinary history book carved in stone.

Auvers-sur-Oise

In Our Top+  ✅

Type  Small Town

Auvers-sur-Oise stretches between the river, green hillsides, and the farmland above the village. This long, linear layout gives it a very different feel from the small towns built around a central square. As you explore, you’ll move from streets lined with old houses to steep paths, gardens, and sweeping views across the valley.

In the 19th century, these landscapes attracted many painters, including Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, and others. Reproductions displayed throughout the village let you compare their paintings with the very scenes that inspired them.

Even so, Auvers is far more than an open air museum. The church overlooking the rooftops, the château, the stone walls, and the houses surrounded by greenery still create the feeling of a lived in, peaceful small town with a slightly melancholic atmosphere that’s best discovered on foot.

Live shows, character meet and greets, and attractions designed for younger children round out the experience.

Château de Chantilly

In Our Top+  ✅

Type  Castle & Garden
Price  €21

Full Name
Château de Chantilly

The Château de Chantilly is reflected in vast ornamental ponds at the heart of an estate surrounded by forest. The property evolved through successive transformations between the Middle Ages and the 19th century. An earlier fortress already stood on this marshy site, chosen to control the road linking Paris with the cities of northern France.

Today, the château contains richly decorated apartments and an exceptional collection of paintings, drawings, and rare books. Unlike many royal residences altered after the French Revolution, the rooms still retain the atmosphere of a private 19th century home, with the artworks displayed according to the wishes of its last great owner.

Outside, the estate combines formal gardens, ornamental ponds, canals, and more natural landscapes. Nearby, the Great Stables reflect the importance of horses to the estate’s history. Their extraordinary size makes them feel less like stables and more like a palace built for horses.

Senlis

Type  Small Town

Senlis has one of the best preserved historic centers north of Paris. Behind its old walls, cobbled streets, stone houses, and historic mansions are packed into a compact area that’s easy to explore without any particular route. The cathedral’s tall spire rises above the rooftops and serves as a constant landmark as you wander through town.

The town preserves nearly two thousand years of history. Sections of the Roman walls still surround part of the center, while the remains of the royal castle recall Senlis’ political importance during the Middle Ages. It was here that Hugh Capet was elected king in 987.

As you follow the ramparts, you’ll come across gardens, meadows, and small streams at the foot of the ancient walls. This close connection between historic streets and natural surroundings gives Senlis a peaceful atmosphere that feels surprisingly removed from the busy roads nearby.

Château de Versailles
Palais de Versailles

Versailles began as a modest hunting lodge built for Louis XIII. His son, Louis XIV, gradually transformed it into an enormous palace designed to house the government, the royal family, and thousands of people connected to the court. From 1682 until the French Revolution, Versailles was the center of royal power in France. Its architecture, ceremonies, and organization later became a model for royal residences across Europe.

Most visits begin in the State Apartments, where every room was designed to impress. Colored marble, painted ceilings, gilding, sculptures, and rich tapestries combine to create a setting where politics and spectacle become one. The Hall of Mirrors is the palace’s most famous space, with its long row of mirrors facing the garden windows beneath a ceiling celebrating the military and diplomatic achievements of Louis XIV.

The private apartments reveal a more intimate side of Versailles. Bedrooms, studies, and smaller salons offer a glimpse into the daily lives of the monarchs behind the grandeur of official ceremonies. Several rooms were altered by later rulers, allowing you to compare the styles of the 17th and 18th centuries.

Behind the palace, the gardens extend the architecture on a monumental scale. Straight avenues, geometric flowerbeds, statues, fountains, and ornamental ponds create endless perspectives. The natural landscape was extensively reshaped so that every terrace and every pool became part of a carefully orchestrated composition.

The estate covers more than 800 hectares and also includes the Grand Trianon, the Petit Trianon, and Marie Antoinette’s Hamlet. These smaller residences allowed the royal family to escape, at least temporarily, from the strict rules of court life. The Grand Trianon is especially notable for its pink marble facades and elegant galleries opening onto the gardens.

La Roche-Guyon

Type  Village

La Roche-Guyon occupies a spectacular setting between the Seine River and a towering chalk cliff. The village developed on a narrow strip of land, which explains its tightly packed streets, houses built against the hillside, and the constant feeling of being overshadowed by the rock face.

The château dominates the landscape. Its buildings were expanded over the centuries, while an ancient keep still stands high on the cliff above. Passageways and rooms carved directly into the rock recall the homes and storage spaces that once occupied the hillside.

From the lower streets, your view constantly shifts between the river, historic facades, and the surrounding slopes. Walking paths lead up to higher ground, where you can enjoy sweeping views of the broad curve of the Seine, the château gardens, and the farmland surrounding the village.

Château de Maintenon

Type  Castle & Garden
Price  €12.50

Full Name
Château de Maintenon

The Château de Maintenon combines the defensive appearance of a medieval fortress with the elegance of a Renaissance residence. Round towers, stone facades, inner courtyards, and apartments added over the centuries give it a much more intimate character than the great royal palaces.

The visit takes you through furnished rooms, narrow passageways, and elegant salons connected to the court of Louis XIV. The château is especially associated with the king’s secret wife, Madame de Maintenon, who received the estate during the 17th century and played a major role in its development.

Outside, your attention is immediately drawn to the immense unfinished arches of an aqueduct. It was intended to carry water from the nearby river to the fountains of Versailles, but construction was abandoned after thousands of workers had already been employed.

A canal, tree lined avenues, and formal flowerbeds shape the gardens, while the aqueduct closes the main perspective and creates one of the estate’s most spectacular views.

Cathédrale de Chartres

In Our Top+  ✅

Type  Cathedral

Full Name
Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres

Chartres Cathedral rises above the city and the wide plains surrounding it. Rebuilt mainly after the fire of 1194, it is distinguished by its two very different towers. One retains its simple, early Gothic spire, while the other features a much more elaborate design added several centuries later.

Inside, the soaring nave and richly colored light create an unforgettable atmosphere. More than 170 stained glass windows depict religious scenes, but they also portray kings, craftsmen, and everyday life during the Middle Ages. Their deep blue color has become one of the cathedral’s most recognizable features.

The floor of the nave still preserves a large circular labyrinth dating from the 13th century. Rather than a puzzle, it was designed as a symbolic pilgrimage representing a spiritual journey toward the center.

Be sure to look closely at the thousands of sculptures covering the entrances. Together, they transform the facades into stories carved in stone for a medieval population that was largely unable to read.

Full Name
Domaine de la Vallée aux Loups

The Vallée aux Loups is made up of several gardens and wooded areas nestled within a sheltered valley. Its rolling landscape, winding paths, and dense vegetation quickly make you forget how close you are to the city. The estate combines the house where the writer Chateaubriand lived, a wooded park, and a large arboretum devoted to remarkable trees.

Chateaubriand settled here in 1807, seeking a peaceful retreat away from political life in Paris. He transformed the grounds by planting trees connected to his travels and personal memories. As a result, the garden has a deliberately romantic and informal character, where nature seems to take the lead over careful design.

The arboretum extends this atmosphere with rare trees, open lawns, ponds, and small bridges. Sheltered within the valley, it provides ideal conditions for the collections and offers an especially peaceful walk, particularly when the leaves begin to change color.

Domaine de Sceaux

Type  Park/Garden

Full Name
Domaine de Sceaux

The Sceaux Estate unfolds around a 19th century château, with long avenues, ornamental ponds, and sweeping lawns stretching across the landscape. The park was created in the late 17th century for Jean Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV’s chief minister, and later expanded by his son. The grounds were laid out along grand geometric axes, making full use of the natural slopes to create long vistas and a striking sense of depth.

From the terraces beside the château, your eye follows the geometric gardens before descending toward the cascades and the Grand Canal. Rows of trees frame the long views, while groves create quieter, more secluded spaces. Several historic buildings remain, including the Orangery, built in 1686 with its long south facing facade.

The estate is more than just a formal garden. Wide lawns, shaded avenues, and wooded areas make it easy to leave the main viewpoints behind. In spring, the blooming cherry trees attract large crowds and transform parts of the park into an entirely different landscape.

Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte

In Our Top+  ✅

Type  Castle & Garden
Price  €18

Full Name
Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte

Vaux le Vicomte was built in the 17th century for France’s powerful Superintendent of Finances. To create his residence, he brought together some of the finest artists of the time. The result is an exceptional harmony between architecture, interior decoration, and landscape design.

The château stands at the center of a perfectly aligned axis. From the reception rooms, your eye passes through the windows, across the geometric flowerbeds, over the ornamental ponds, and all the way to a statue standing at the far end of the estate. Changes in elevation are carefully concealed, creating the illusion of a garden unfolding without interruption.

Inside, the State Apartments, painted ceilings, tapestries, and period furniture evoke the luxury of the 17th century. The great oval salon forms the heart of the château and opens directly onto the gardens.

The spectacular celebration held for the château’s inauguration ultimately led to the owner’s downfall, as he was arrested shortly afterward on the king’s orders. Even so, Vaux le Vicomte became one of the main inspirations for the later development of Versailles.

Barbizon

Type  Village

For centuries, Barbizon was simply a small village on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau. In the 19th century, its rural houses, sandy lanes, and surrounding landscapes attracted painters who wanted to work directly in nature. Many artists settled here, giving rise to a movement that became a turning point in the history of landscape painting.

The main street still features several former homes, studios, and buildings linked to this artistic period. Reproductions of famous paintings allow you to compare the landscapes, trees, and rural scenes with the places that inspired them.

At the end of the village, the streets almost immediately give way to the forest. Walking trails wind between sandstone boulders, oak trees, and sandy clearings that provided the painters with many of their favorite subjects. Barbizon is best experienced as a place where art and nature blend seamlessly together.

Château de Fontainebleau

In Our Top+  ✅

Type  Castle & Garden
Price  €17

Full Name
Château de Fontainebleau

Fontainebleau was home to French rulers for nearly eight centuries. What began as a medieval hunting lodge gradually evolved into an immense palace that was enlarged, transformed, and redecorated by successive generations. This long history explains its remarkable diversity, where facades, courtyards, and apartments sometimes feel as though they belong to entirely different buildings. Altogether, the palace contains around 1,500 rooms and nearly 900 years of history.

The Renaissance left behind some of its most spectacular interiors. Galleries covered with paintings, stucco decoration, carved woodwork, and mythological figures introduced an artistic style deeply influenced by Italy. Farther on, the royal apartments reveal changes made through the 19th century.

The famous horseshoe staircase is the château’s best known landmark. It was here that Napoleon bid farewell to his soldiers in 1814. Rooms dedicated to his reign display his apartments, personal belongings, and political memorabilia.

Beyond the palace, several gardens, a grand canal, and the surrounding forest complete the visit. Fontainebleau feels less perfectly ordered than Versailles, but that very irregularity makes it much easier to appreciate the different historical periods that shaped the estate.

Moret-sur-Loing

Type  Small Town

Moret-sur-Loing still feels like a small fortified town beside the river. Two medieval gates frame the main street, while the remaining walls, the keep, and the church recall its defensive role during the Middle Ages. Inside the walls, tightly packed houses and historic facades create a remarkably well preserved town center.

The Loing is the other defining feature of the landscape. From the bridge, you’ll see old mills, riverside houses, and trees reflected in the calm water. These views inspired Alfred Sisley, who spent many years here and painted the town’s bridges, gates, and ever changing light countless times.

Moret is easy to explore in a short visit, but its streets, narrow passageways, and riverbanks invite you to slow down. Here, stone and water create an almost untouched setting that’s especially peaceful early in the morning or toward the end of the day.

Yèvre-le-Châtel

Type  Village

Yèvre-le-Châtel stands on a rocky hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. Within its ancient walls, small limestone houses, flower filled gardens, and winding lanes create an exceptionally well preserved village. The whole site is compact enough to explore at a leisurely pace without following any particular route.

The fortress, built in the early 13th century, has four imposing towers and walls forming a large rectangular enclosure. From the top, the views stretch across farmland, woodlands, and the distant edge of the Forest of Orléans.

Away from the ramparts stand the ruins of a Gothic church whose construction was abandoned during the Middle Ages. Its roofless walls open to the sky, giving the village a striking silhouette that’s both monumental and romantic.

Provins is divided into two very different areas. On the hilltop, the medieval town has preserved its walls, fortified gates, winding streets, and large stone houses. Below, the lower town developed around former trading areas and religious buildings. This clear division between the upper and lower town makes its history easy to understand.

The town reached its peak during the 12th and 13th centuries thanks to the famous trade fairs that attracted merchants from across Europe. Warehouses, underground cellars, passageways, and large halls still bear witness to this thriving commercial past.

Today, the ramparts overlook open fields and wide rural landscapes. Inside the walls, the central tower, the old houses, and the sloping streets form one of the most complete medieval townscapes in France, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
