Itinerary Idea

🚆 Route to Villefranche-sur-Mer by Train

Villefranche Old Town

Clinging to the hillside, Villefranche-sur-Mer’s old town is full of charm, with sloping streets and colorful facades in a classic Mediterranean vibe. You’ll get lost in a maze of vaulted passages, stairways, and little shaded squares. The most unusual street is probably Rue Obscure, which runs underneath buildings for most of its length, a reminder of the town’s old defensive layout. The whole area feels authentic and untouched, far from the glitz of nearby resorts. It’s the kind of place where you just slow down and wander between the sea and the past.

Waterfront & Port

Villefranche’s seafront is easily one of the most stunning on the Riviera. The Port de la Santé, tucked into a deep natural bay, is filled with fishing boats and pleasure craft in a postcard-perfect setting. The quays are lined with warm-toned buildings and restaurant terraces where you can enjoy fresh fish and local dishes. The water is often crystal clear, and the colorful boats only add to the charm. It’s lively but still feels authentic, with a nice balance of local life and easygoing tourism.

Citadel

The Saint-Elme Citadel was built in the 1500s to defend the bay, and today it’s a cultural spot. The fortress is really well preserved and now houses several small museums, including the Volti Museum with its giant female sculptures and the Goetz-Boumeester Museum for modern and contemporary art. You’ll also find gardens, rotating exhibitions, and some great views over the bay. Whether you’re into art or not, it’s a peaceful place to stroll around and soak up a bit of history.

🚖 Route to St. Jean-Cap-Ferrat by Uber

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild

Over in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is a Belle Époque gem. It was built by Baroness Béatrice Ephrussi in a neo-Renaissance style, and it sits high on the peninsula with amazing views on both sides. Inside, you’ll walk through rooms filled with fine furniture, porcelain, tapestries, and artworks from all over Europe. But the real highlight is outside, nine themed gardens, from Florentine to Japanese, each one more magical than the last, with fountains, sculptures, and reflecting pools set to music.

Seaside Path or Beach Time

Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is wrapped in a gorgeous coastal trail, especially around the Saint-Hospice point. The path hugs the cliffs and gives you breathtaking views of the sea and rugged coastline. It’s an easy walk, with shady spots and a few places where you can take a dip.

If you’d rather just chill, head to Fosses or Fossettes beach, they’re little coves with turquoise water, perfect for a peaceful swim.
