The Loire is one of the largest rivers in France, stretching from the French Atlantic coast to the center of the country.

On this map, you can view the section of the river and its tributaries focused on the Loire Valley area. The heart of the valley as defined by UNESCO is outlined in red. The yellow area represents the entire network of the river’s tributaries, giving you an idea of its expanse.

The most well-known adjacent rivers are Cher, Indre, Loir, Erdre, Sarthe, and Mayenne.

This screenshot displays only the main cities of the region, taken from a distance to give you an idea of how far apart they are. The background of the map emphasizes the layout of the road infrastructure.

The region doesn’t have any large cities but consists of towns of various sizes, among which the most well-known are: Orléans, Tours, Angers, Amboise, Blois, Saumur, Chinon, and Azay-le-Rideau.

Where is the Loire Valley in France on a Map ?

The Loire Valley is located in the western half of France, between the Atlantic Ocean and the country’s median line. In terms of latitude, it is situated just above the center of France.

It has a horizontal elongated shape, as highlighted in pink on the map, due to its composition on either side of the Loire River, as seen on the earlier map.

The bordering provinces are:

  • Brittany, Normandy, and Ile-de-France to the north
  • Vendée, Poitou and Limousin to the south
  • Burgundy to the east
  • The Atlantic Ocean to the west
