Vieux Bordeaux

Old Bordeaux is the place to start if you want to understand why the city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The historic center is part of a vast urban area recognized for the consistency of its architecture, its connection to the Garonne River, and the beauty of its stone façades.

The best way to explore it is on foot, because walking through the streets gives you the clearest sense of its rich historical character: old streets, classical buildings, carved façades, squares, gates, balconies, and views opening onto the river.

Bordeaux also preserves many traces of its maritime and trading past, which played a major role in shaping the city’s development. The historic center reveals Bordeaux on several levels at once: a medieval heritage still visible in the layout of some streets, a grand 18th century urban landscape, and a vibrant city that continues to evolve while remaining deeply connected to its history.

Place de la Bourse is one of Bordeaux’s most iconic landmarks. Located right on the Garonne River, it stands out for its elegant 18th century architecture and its spectacular open view of the waterfront. It’s the perfect spot to take a break, snap a few photos, and admire the harmony of the buildings. That’s just as true at sunset as it’s when the façades are beautifully lit up at night.

Right across from it, the Water Mirror adds an almost magical touch to the experience. Depending on the time of day, it either reflects the buildings like a giant mirror or releases a light mist that completely changes the atmosphere. It’s a must see stop and the best place to experience Bordeaux’s most famous view.

St-André (Bordeaux Cathedral)

In Video  Yes

Appeal  ✦✦✦✦✦
Type  Cathedral

Full Name
Cathédrale Saint-André

Together with Pey Berland Tower, Saint André Cathedral forms Bordeaux’s most important religious landmarks. The cathedral is impressive for both its size, 124 meters long and 44 meters wide, and its mix of architectural styles, the result of several construction phases over the centuries.

Its western façade, built during the 11th and 12th centuries on the remains of an older structure, is the oldest part of the building. The Gothic choir and transept were added later, giving the cathedral a powerful but not entirely uniform appearance. The flying buttresses and supporting structures also reflect the stability issues that once threatened the nave.

The 13th century Royal Portal is one of the cathedral’s most remarkable features, with its sculptures of the apostles and its tympanum depicting the Resurrection and the Last Judgment. Inside, you can admire the soaring nave, the chapels, the 18th century ironwork, the mahogany and red marble pulpit, the sculptures, and the treasury.

Built separately from the cathedral, Pey Berland Tower serves as an independent bell tower. This separation helped prevent the weight of the bells from putting additional strain on the main building. Its Gothic architecture, striking height, and prominent location make it one of the most recognizable landmarks in central Bordeaux.

Saint Michel Basilica is one of Bordeaux’s major religious and urban landmarks. Built between the 14th and 16th centuries, it displays a strong architectural unity in the Flamboyant Gothic style.

Its silhouette is dominated by a bell tower that stands apart from the church itself, a decision linked to the soft ground beneath the site, as the tower’s weight could have weakened the main building. Rising to 114 meters, the spire is considered the tallest monument in southwestern France.

Inside the basilica, you can admire the wide side aisles, the soaring nave, and the series of side chapels that line the church.
