Stay beside its old ramparts in the morning, and within an hour you can be wandering through Nice, admiring Monaco from the Rock, discovering the perfume houses of Grasse, or climbing the medieval lanes of Èze.

That compact geography is the real luxury here. Many of the best day trips from Antibes are remarkably easy without a car, leaving you more time for sea views, old streets, markets, museums, and long lunches. If you are organizing a longer stay, our French Riviera travel guide and French Riviera tourist map will help put these excursions into perspective.

8 Best Day Trips from Antibes

1. Nice: The Best All-Round Day Trip from Antibes

If you have time for only one excursion, we would choose Nice. It offers the most complete French Riviera day trip from Antibes, combining a substantial historic center, local food, museums, architecture, Mediterranean views, and a famous waterfront.

The journey could hardly be easier. Antibes and Nice are approximately 20 km (12.4 miles) apart by rail. Direct trains average around 25 minutes, with the fastest services taking considerably less.

Start in Vieux Nice. Tall ochre, yellow, and terracotta buildings squeeze around narrow lanes where shutters filter the southern light. Cours Saleya is the lively heart of the quarter, particularly in the morning, when market stalls and café terraces give the neighborhood its rhythm.

From there, climb Castle Hill for the classic panorama over the Baie des Anges. Then wander back down toward the port or the Promenade des Anglais.

Do not try to see everything. Nice is too large for that. For a first visit, we recommend Old Nice, Castle Hill, the port, and the Promenade, with time left for socca or a leisurely lunch.

Our Nice 1 day itinerary gives you a logical walking route. You can also browse the best things to do in Nice and use our Nice tourist map while exploring.

Still deciding whether to devote a full day to the city? Our guide to whether Nice is worth visiting goes into more detail.

Good to know: arrive early if you want to experience the old town before its busiest hours. Nice lives all year, but Vieux Nice is at its most enjoyable before the lunchtime crowds arrive.

2. Cannes: Glamour, Beaches and the Old Town

Cannes is so close to Antibes that it almost feels like cheating. This is the easiest day trip on our list, ideal when you want a change of scenery without sacrificing much of the day to transport.

The two stations are only around 11 km (6.8 miles) apart by rail. Direct trains normally take roughly 8 to 13 minutes.

Of course, there is the Croisette, the palace hotels, designer boutiques, and the red-carpet mythology of the film festival. But stop there and you miss the Cannes we find more interesting.

Head toward Le Suquet, the old quarter rising above the Vieux Port. The lanes narrow, the atmosphere becomes more Provençal, and from the hilltop the modern Riviera suddenly makes more sense. Cannes began as something much humbler than the glamorous resort below.

Marché Forville is another worthwhile stop before you return toward the Palais des Festivals and walk along the Croisette. The official visitor highlights also include Le Suquet, the old port, the Croisette, Palais des Festivals, and the Lérins Islands.

For a first visit, combine Le Suquet, Forville Market, the Palais des Festivals, and the Croisette. If the weather cooperates, add an hour on one of the sandy beaches.

Our Cannes 1 day itinerary provides a complete route. The answer depends largely on whether you venture beyond the Croisette.

3. Monaco: Palaces, Monte Carlo and Mediterranean Views

Monaco is tiny on the map and surprisingly dense on the ground. In one day, you can move from historic lanes on the Rock to superyachts, gardens, Belle Époque architecture, and the polished theater of Monte Carlo.

From Antibes, the rail journey covers approximately 41 km (25.5 miles). Direct trains generally take about 50 to 55 minutes.

Take the train rather than driving unless you have a specific reason to bring a car. Monaco is compact, vertical, and surprisingly manageable on foot thanks to public lifts, escalators, and pedestrian connections.

Begin with Monaco-Ville, the historic district on the Rock. The Prince’s Palace, cathedral, narrow streets, and views over Port Hercule create a very different atmosphere from Monte Carlo. If museums appeal to you, the Oceanographic Museum is the major stop and can comfortably occupy part of the day.

Then head toward Monte Carlo. Even if you have no intention of gambling, the Casino de Monte-Carlo and its surroundings deserve a look. Gardens, ornate facades, exotic cars, and the Mediterranean squeezed between steep hills make the setting memorable.

We recommend concentrating on Monaco-Ville and Monte Carlo rather than trying to cover every district.

Follow our Monaco 1 day itinerary for a practical route. You can also compare the best things to do in Monaco and use our Monaco tourist map to orient yourself.

Good to know: Monaco involves considerably more uphill and downhill walking than its size suggests. Comfortable shoes win over Riviera chic here.

4. Èze: A Medieval Village Above the Mediterranean

Èze is close to the postcard version of the French Riviera: stone houses balanced high above the sea, tiny passages disappearing beneath arches, flowering walls, and the Mediterranean spreading out far below.

There is, however, an important transport detail. Trains from Antibes arrive at Èze-sur-Mer, about 33 km (20.5 miles) away by rail. The journey takes roughly 43 to 46 minutes.

The famous medieval village is not beside the station. It sits hundreds of meters above the coast. Bus 83 links Èze-sur-Mer station with Èze Village, while the Nietzsche Path provides the much steeper option on foot.

Once at the top, forget the timetable for a while. The real pleasure of Èze is simply wandering through its medieval lanes, peeking into courtyards and galleries as you work your way toward the Jardin Exotique.

That garden is the grand finale. Perched at around 429 meters above the sea, it combines succulents and sculptural plants with a remarkable coastal panorama.

Come early if possible. Èze is small and deservedly popular, so midday crowds in summer can alter the mood.

Fragonard also has a perfumery here, but we would choose Èze primarily for the village and the view. If fragrance is the goal of the day, Grasse is the stronger excursion.

5. Saint-Paul-de-Vence: Art and Provençal Charm

Saint-Paul-de-Vence manages to be both extremely famous and genuinely beautiful. Behind the fortified walls, old stone houses, galleries, cobbled lanes, little squares, and views across green hills create one of the most atmospheric villages near Antibes.

By road, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is roughly 17 km (10.6 miles) from Antibes, with driving times around 25 minutes in favorable traffic. Public transport is possible, but connections make the journey longer.

This is one of the day trips where having a car genuinely makes life easier. Without one, traveling toward Cagnes-sur-Mer and continuing by bus is usually the more practical approach.

Once inside the village, there is little need for a rigid plan. Walk Rue Grande, explore the ramparts, peer into galleries, and give the architecture time to work its charm. Saint-Paul’s association with artists is more than marketing: painters including Signac, Dufy, Soutine, and Chagall became part of its modern story.

Then continue to the Fondation Maeght.

For art lovers, the Fondation Maeght is not an optional extra but one of the main reasons to make the trip. The walk from the village takes about 30 minutes along an old country road, although you can reach it more directly by other means.

Try to arrive early or stay later in the afternoon. When day-tour crowds fade, the old stones and surrounding hills regain some of their magic.

6. Grasse: Perfume and Provençal Heritage

After several days beside the Mediterranean, Grasse feels like somebody opened a different window. The sea is still close, but hills, fountains, steep lanes, old facades, jasmine, and perfume now set the tone.

Antibes and Grasse are approximately 34 km (21.1 miles) apart by rail, with direct trains normally taking around 40 to 45 minutes.

That makes Grasse one of the easiest inland day trips from Antibes without a car. Be aware that the railway station lies below the historic center, so the last part of the journey involves a climb or local transport.

Perfume is naturally the headline act. Grasse developed from leatherworking and perfumed gloves into an international center of fragrance production. Fragonard, Molinard, and Galimard are among the historic perfume houses visitors can discover, while the International Perfume Museum explores the wider story of scent.

If you have always wanted to create your own fragrance, Grasse is the place to do it. Reserving a workshop in advance is wise during busy periods.

But do not rush straight from one perfumery to another. Around Place aux Aires and the cathedral, Grasse has a lived-in old center of narrow streets, fountains, and ochre buildings.

For us, Grasse is the best excursion when you want to see another side of the French Riviera, far from yachts and beach clubs. It is proof that a good Côte d’Azur itinerary should occasionally turn its back on the sea.

7. Villefranche-sur-Mer: A Relaxed Seaside Escape

Villefranche-sur-Mer does not need a long inventory of monuments to justify the journey. Its greatest attraction is simply the place itself: a deep bay, colorful houses tumbling toward the waterfront, fishing boats, narrow old streets, and a beach within easy walking distance.

From Antibes, the railway covers approximately 27 km (16.8 miles). Direct trains take around 35 to 40 minutes, with the quickest journeys close to 35 minutes.

Better still, the station sits near the water. Villefranche is one of the easiest car-free day trips from Antibes.

Start by wandering through the old town rather than heading directly for the beach. Explore the steep lanes and find Rue Obscure, the unusual covered street running beneath old houses. Then descend toward the harbor and let the pace drop.

Plage des Marinières is the obvious swimming stop. Its position close to both the old town and railway station makes it exceptionally convenient, while other beaches sit around the sheltered bay.

Choose Villefranche when your idea of a successful excursion is slowing down rather than accumulating sights. A swim, a wander, a long lunch, another swim. Sometimes the Riviera really is that simple.

It is particularly appealing outside July and August, when the waterfront has more room to breathe.

8. Menton: Riviera Colors with an Italian Influence

Menton sits almost against Italy and wears that geography beautifully. Pastel facades rise above the sea, baroque towers punctuate the old town, citrus trees flourish in gardens, and the mood feels subtly different from the Riviera farther west.

It is the longest rail excursion on this list but still perfectly practical. Antibes and Menton are approximately 49 km (30.4 miles) apart by train. Average journeys take about 1 hour 16 minutes, while the quickest direct services can take around 1 hour 8 minutes.

Leave Antibes early and Menton becomes a rewarding full-day trip rather than a rushed one.

Start in the old town and climb. Narrow streets and stairways lead toward the Basilica of Saint-Michel-Archange and the Chapel of the White Penitents, an ensemble that dominates the colorful historic quarter and the bay below.

Then return toward Les Sablettes and the waterfront. Menton is also famous for its gardens, a legacy of its mild climate and generations of wealthy winter residents. If botanical gardens interest you, choose one or two rather than trying to collect them all in a day.

Menton is our choice for travelers who have already seen Nice and Cannes and want the Riviera to surprise them again. There is something irresistible about the combination of Italian colors, baroque architecture, mountains, and sea.

Use our Menton 1 day itinerary for the full route. We also cover the best things to do in Menton and provide a practical Menton tourist map.

How to Get Around on Day Trips from Antibes

Antibes is unusually convenient because its railway station sits directly on the main coastal line. Our basic rule is simple: use trains for the coast and consider a car for the hill villages.

If you are planning several rail journeys in France, our interactive France train map can help you understand how the different routes connect.

Day Trips from Antibes by Train

Nice, Cannes, Monaco, Grasse, Villefranche-sur-Mer, and Menton are the strongest train day trips from Antibes. Direct services are widely available, and their stations are reasonably positioned for sightseeing.

Cannes is the quickest, usually requiring little more than ten minutes. Nice follows at around 25 minutes. Even Monaco remains comfortably within an hour on many direct services.

Èze requires more care. The train conveniently reaches Èze-sur-Mer, but Èze Village is high above the railway station. Allow time for the bus or another uphill connection.

Train schedules change, so check your exact outward and return services before departure rather than planning around a generic journey time.

When to Take the Bus

Buses become important when the railway follows the coast but your destination sits in the hills.

Èze is the clearest example. Bus 83 provides the connection between the railway station by the sea and the medieval village above.

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is another destination where local buses complete a public-transport journey. Depending on the current timetable, going via Cagnes-sur-Mer can make more sense than seeking a direct connection from Antibes.

Distance can be deceptive on the Côte d’Azur. A coastal town 40 km away may be easier to reach than a hill village less than 20 km away.

When a Car Is Worth It

A car becomes useful when you want to explore inland, link several villages in one day, or avoid waiting for infrequent bus connections.

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is the strongest candidate among these eight day trips. A car also gives you the freedom to combine it with Vence or other villages in the surrounding hills.

For Nice, Cannes, Monaco, Villefranche-sur-Mer, and Menton, we would normally leave the car in Antibes. The train avoids parking costs and the summer traffic that can turn a short distance into a frustrating journey.

If you drive, an early start pays dividends. Riviera roads are much more enjoyable before everyone else decides to leave for the beach.

FAQ About Day Trips from Antibes

What Are the Easiest Day Trips from Antibes by Train?

Cannes is the easiest day trip from Antibes by train. The cities are only around 11 km (6.8 miles) apart by rail, and direct trains often take roughly 8 to 13 minutes.

Nice is almost as simple and provides substantially more to see over a full day. Villefranche-sur-Mer, Monaco, Grasse, and Menton are also practical direct train excursions.

If you do not want to rent a car on the French Riviera, Antibes is therefore an excellent base.

What Is the Best Day Trip from Antibes Without a Car?

For a first-time visitor, Nice is the best day trip from Antibes without a car. The rail connection is fast, the historic center is walkable, and there is enough variety for a full day without needing taxis after arrival.

Choose Cannes instead if convenience is your top priority. Choose Villefranche-sur-Mer if you mainly want a pretty old town, lunch, and time beside the sea.

Monaco is another strong car-free option despite its steep terrain.

Which Hilltop Villages Can You Visit from Antibes?

Èze and Saint-Paul-de-Vence are our two first choices.

Èze wins for the sheer drama of its setting. Few villages on the Riviera can compete with the views from its rocky perch above the Mediterranean.

Saint-Paul-de-Vence is better for travelers interested in art and cultural history. Its ramparts and galleries are already worth the journey, and the Fondation Maeght makes it a much richer art-focused day.

With a car, many more inland villages become realistic, but these two make the most sense for a first French Riviera trip.

Is Nice or Cannes Better for a Day Trip from Antibes?

Choose Nice if you want the more complete cultural day. It offers a larger old town, more museums, stronger local-food traditions, Castle Hill, and the Promenade des Anglais.

Choose Cannes if you want something easier and lighter, with Le Suquet, the Croisette, sandy beaches, and an exceptionally short train journey.

For most first-time visitors, we would dedicate a full day to Nice and keep Cannes for a more relaxed day or even a half-day when time is limited.

Which Day Trip from Antibes Should You Choose?

There is no need to treat the French Riviera like a checklist. Antibes works so well as a base precisely because you can choose a different mood each morning: city streets, hilltop village, beach, art, perfume, or unabashed glamour.

Choose Nice for the best overall first excursion, particularly on your first trip to the Côte d’Azur.

Choose Cannes for maximum convenience, with an exceptionally short train ride.

Choose Monaco for spectacle, from the Prince’s Palace to Monte Carlo.

Choose Èze for the panorama, but remember that the station and hilltop village are separate.

Choose Saint-Paul-de-Vence for art and medieval atmosphere, especially the Fondation Maeght.

Choose Grasse when you want to escape the coast, discover perfume, and see the Provençal hinterland.

Choose Villefranche-sur-Mer for a slow seaside day, preferably involving a swim and a long lunch.

Choose Menton for the most distinctive longer excursion, where Riviera colors meet baroque architecture and a hint of Italy.

With the coastline stitched together by rail and the hill villages sitting just inland, the best day trips from Antibes are not only beautiful, they are genuinely practical. Pick the places that match your interests, leave a little empty space in the schedule, and allow the Riviera to do what it does best: tempt you to stay longer than planned.

Antibes is one of the best bases for exploring the French Riviera.
